No matter how simple the world may perceive your job to be, every hard working person deserves a moment to turn-off and getaway. Taking a break is an important part of maintaining your peace of mind. In many cases we don’t have the time or the funds to fly to Dubai and that is precisely why the infamous “staycation” was created. Save the trip to Santorini, Greece for another time, we’ve put together a list of penny pinching fun that you can do in one day.

1. Go for a Swim!

Being around water is one of the simplest ways to feel taken away from the chaos of your 9 to 5. You’d be surprised how far removed you can feel from home when you’re swimming at the beach or lake even if it’s down the street from you. About 60% of Americans live nearby a swimmable body of water, so pack your bags and make it a day trip with family and friends. If you are part of the 40% of Americas without a beach or a lake nearby, locate the community pools in your area. Pools are often in community recreation centers. We all deserve aquatic thrills every once in a while.

2. Spa Day

If you’re already a regular at the nail salon, take it step further and throw in a massage. Releasing muscle tension and being pampered for a little more hour can make all the difference in your mood. A professional Masseuse knows how to pinpoint the pressure points in your body and alleviate tension you didn’t know you had. All you have to do is surrender to the relaxation. Prices for a back massage vary but you can find an hour session for as low as $40 if you do your homework.

3. Laser Tag with Friends

Sometimes we take for granted the simple thrill of competition. Round up a group of friends or even the family and run around like a kids with a toy guns. Most importantly, forget all the deadlines you have for tomorrow and enjoy the simple pleasure of play. This is a workout and a rocking good time for kids and grownups. There are Laser tag arenas located a just about every major city, so you’ll have no trouble finding one near you!

4. Visit the Zoo or Aquarium

Seeing foreign animals you don’t normally encounter up close and personal is an easy way to transcend you into a place far away from home.  Find a zoo in your area and make it a day trip with kids. There are websites like aza.org dedicated to giving you an A-Z directory of zoos and aquariums in driving distance from any place in America. Your escape is only an Internet search away.

5. Go to the park

This one may seem obvious but you’d be surprised how many people do not take advantage of local parks. The park isn’t just a place for children. In fact, plenty of adults form sports teams in their communities that you are welcome to join or just watch.
