The only way for the Jinja Family to truly appreciate the soul of Bali would be to visit a few out of the many famous Balinese temples. With each visit, we found ourselves in awe of how the spiritual balance between religion and architecture was so delicately woven into the exotic landscape of Bali. It would nearly be a crime for us not to share the breathtaking pictures and history of these temples!
Tanah Lot Temple
As each wave breaks over the rock that supports one of the most sacred Balinese temples, one cannot help but recall the name of Dang Hyang Dwijendra, an endeared religious figure of Hindu teachings. His relation with the temple first began in the 15th century, where his religious calling soon led him to spend much of his meditative thoughts and prayers atop a bird-shaped rock. As his beliefs radiated through him, Dang Hyang Dwijendra’s teachings and spiritual consciousness soon began pouring over into a local village. As more and more villagers took up their profound religion and became disciples, they began venturing out of their homes one by one. In an attempt to prevent any further citizens from converting, the leader of the village quickly asked Dang Hyang Dwijendra to leave. It is believed that instead of abandoning the area, he simply tuned into the power fueled by his religious connection, and moved his meditation rock just passed the coast of the shoreline and into the sea.
Tanah Lot Temple, which rests atop the bird-shaped rock, still exists today, and continues to embody the same spiritual essence Dang Hyang Dwijendra dedicated his life to representing.
Taman Ayun Temple
Surviving since 1634, Taman Ayun Temple sits just North of Denpasar City, Bali. The temple uplifts the intricate architectural and religious values of the first Mengwi King and his people. Serving as a manifestation of Hindu gods, the temple offers a destination for locals to worship and broaden their spiritual awareness. Taman Ayun Temple, to this day, remains as a holy and historical symbol, immersed in gardens, oases, and the mystic wonders of Bali.
