The Importance of Relaxation and€“ 3 Ways to Unwind and RewindThe Importance of Relaxation and€“ 3 Ways to Unwind and Rewind

A key component to healthy living in this day and age is taking time to relax and put all stress and worries away whenever you can. We live in a culture where people deal with stress all day long every day and it takes a huge toll on our health. Working every day with no rest is simply no good for our overall wellness; it’s so important to take care of ourselves and unwind at the end of each work day and to even take an extended break by going on vacation. I consider myself a world traveler who has been lucky enough to follow my passion for experiencing new places and cultures, and making new friends. This has become the biggest way for me to relax and unwind. Here are three tips on how you can reduce stress in your life.

1. Traveling around the world and learning about different cultures can be a wonderful way to relax and get away from the daily stress of work and more. Taking a family vacation to an island destination is an ideal getaway for relaxing on the beach and under the sun. Fun activities that get the whole family moving can also be great for lowering stress levels while bonding with your family.

2. Meditation, deep breathing and yoga are all good techniques for stress relief and they’re easy to practice on a daily basis. You just need a few minutes to yourself and some room to stretch out and get comfortable. Focus on breathing deeply from the abdomen and practice tensing and then relaxing different muscles in your body to counteract the muscle tension that accompanies stress. Practicing yoga will not only reduce stress and anxiety, it will also improve flexibility, strength, balance and stamina.

3. Listening to soothing music can also relax your body and mind to reduce stress. Music can help you quiet your mind and bring peace to your thoughts and it can be especially helpful during meditation and yoga. Try listening to nature sounds like the ocean or birds; also, classical or jazz can be very relaxing as well (However, some people may relax well by listening to their favorite music genre – even hard rock!). By combining these things you can create a sense of balance in your life and experience a deeper relaxation that can also help you get a more restful sleep at night so you wake up in the morning feeling refreshed and ready to take on the day.

Relaxation has been found to boost memory, fight off colds, protect the heart, lower your risk of stroke, and even keep you slim. There are plenty more health benefits to relaxation and anything that lowers your stress levels is definitely beneficial. Take time to do whatever allows you to de-stress, especially after a long day at work. When you’re relaxed, you feel more centered and you’re taking a big step in the journey towards wellness.
